Despite its relatively small physical size, every sixth person in the world lives in India!
Consider this: you would need to multiply the U.S. population by four—and move everyone east of the Mississippi River—to make our nation comparable in size to India.
- India is the fastest growing country on earth
- It is home to over 2,500 distinct people groups
- Over 1,600 languages and dialects are spoken across India
- 200 million Indian women cannot read or write
- Nearly half of Indian girls are married by age 18
- Over 820 million people in India earn less than $2 a day
This is how we see our world.
Our world maps show each country according to geographical boundaries.
Over a billion people live in India, a nation just one-third the size of the United States!India is located in south Asia, and shares a border with six countries: Pakistan, China, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, and Burma. Though Indian civilization dates back as far as 10,000 years, the modern Republic of India was formed in 1947 after almost 100 years of British colonial rule. The Hindi name for India is Bharat.
Did you know that India is divided into states, just like America? India has 28 states and 7 union territories. Each state has its own government and capital. Over 166 million people live in Uttar Pradesh, the state with the highest population. That's like squeezing more than half of the population of the United States** into a state about the size of Minnesota! Click here for a map of India's states that you can print and color.
Many of India's state boundaries are defined by regional languages. For example, Tamil is the most common language spoken in the southern state of Tamil Nadu. In Punjab, in north India, most people speak the Punjabi language. With over 1,600 languages and dialects spoken across India, it is not uncommon for people from different regions of the country to be unable to speak with each other!
