Literacy student experiences answered prayers
October 1, 2008
The villagers taunted Vaana daily because she had no children.
Even her own family made Vaana keep her distance, convinced she was cursed by the gods. They made sure to tell her how worthless she was for not providing sons to her husband, a laborer who carries bags of vegetables to the market to earn a living.
Married at the tender age of 13...Vaana was now 30 years old. Her heart and mind were consumed with having a child. She fasted and made frequent sacrifices to her family's gods. It seemed to be no use.
When a Mission India Adult Literacy Class started in her village, Vaana quickly enrolled. She had never had a chance to learn how to read and write before she was married. And she was desperate to turn her thoughts to anything but her inability to have a baby.
Vaana came to the class each night without fail. She was an eager student and was captivated by the stories from the Bible.
After hearing several times about the power of praying to Jesus, Vaana decided to share her burden with her teacher. Together they knelt down and prayed to God, asking Him to bless Vaana with a child.
Today, Vaana is a joyous mother of a baby boy. She and her husband are both followers of Jesus, and regularly attend the church services where they are encouraged and blessed by the worship and prayers. Their family has also been open to the message of the Gospel, saying that Jesus is the true God who answers prayers.
